Technical Study

scene
"Uneasy Center", the original from Bridget Riley contains strong visual elements, which lead to three-dimensional impressions. This had been the source for a technical study to try and experiment with stereographic features and movements.

The result is something like a short stereo movie, where the real spatial effects can only be seen, when crossing the eyes. You may even get three-dimensional impressions with the normal view, but these effects are quite different from those stereo effects.

The small pictures on this side are not good qualified for stereographic effects.

typical examples

Without using the mouse you may watch 6 sequences with slow construction and destruction of conical figures. These figures look like the examples  on the left hand side. Viewing these figures using the stereo effect by crossing the eyes will change heights in deeps and vice versa (Upside down).  Points which seem to be at the top with normal viewing will be seen in the background with stereo viewing (Upside down). Both figures overlay to only one spatial figure with stereo viewing. Depending on the actual scene the top of this spatial figure will sometime be in front of you and sometime in the background.

There are some sequences in the movie where the stereo effect will collapse. Then the eyes are forced to switch between front and back (Upside down) because of the construction process, when it will result in non existing three-dimensional figures (for example the picture in the middle). This effect may only be seen using stereo viewing.

changing up and down
The change of sequences is introduced by a slow motion where the right hand figure is reconstructed. Segments are slowly moved so that the eyes can follow the change between up and down or back and forth (Upside down).
mouse interaction
After crossing the border of the frame twice with the mouse you will activate a new sequence where the figures begin to move inside the frame depending on position ot the mouse. The program allows again to produce illegal figures which collapse while viewing the stereo effect. At such moments the eyes are again forced to switch between up and down (Upside down).
mouseclicks

You may deactivate the mouse interaction with a mouseclick. Then a short sequence is produced which deconstructs the last figure before the normal standard sequences will start again.. The deconstruction varies depending on the position of the top of the figure (see examples on left hand side).

With normal viewing you will see typical optical art with flat pictures which seem to be three-dimensional. While viewing with crossed eyes you will watch a spatial figure coming out of the screen.

For practicing the stereo view a steady picture will be more fit and easier:

The picture shows the smallest gray circle as the top of a cone in front of the screen.
